    Stationary stochastic Navier–Stokes on the plane at and above criticality

    In the present paper, we study the fractional incompressible Stochastic Navier–Stokes equation on R2, formally defined as ∂tv=−12(−Δ)θv−λv⋅∇v+∇p+∇⊥(−Δ)θ−12ξ,∇⋅v=0, (0.1) where θ∈(0,1], ξ is the space-time white noise on R+×R2 and λ is the coupling constant. For any value of θ the previous equation is ill-posed due to the singularity of the noise, and is critical for θ=1 and supercritical for θ∈(0,1). For θ=1, we prove that the weak coupling regime for the equation, i.e. regularisation at scale N and coupling constant λ=λ^/logN−−−−−√, is meaningful in that the sequence {vN}N of regularised solutions is tight and the nonlinearity does not vanish as N→∞. Instead, for θ∈(0,1) we show that the large scale behaviour of v is trivial, as the nonlinearity vanishes and v is simply converges to the solution of (0.1) with λ=0

    Surface acoustic waves in finite slabs of three-dimensional phononic crystals

    We study theoretically, by means of layer-multiple-scattering techniques, the propagation of elastic waves through finite slabs of phononic crystals consisting of metallic spheres in a polyester matrix, embedded in air. In particular, we focus on the study of modes localized on the surfaces of the structure. Their origin and behavior, as well as the physical parameters that influence and determine their appearance, are investigated in detail. Our results reveal the existence of absolute phononic frequency gaps in these finite structures, and point out the possibility, under an appropriate choice of the parameters, of tunable regions of frequency free of propagating and/or surface-localized modes. © 2008 The American Physical Society.Peer Reviewe

    Determination of the laser-induced damage threshold of polymer optical fibers

    Investigating the properties of manufactured polymer optical fibers is essential to determine proper areas of application. Using pulsed laser radiation, especially with respect to laser activity in optical fibers, the maximum acceptable transmittable energy without inducing damage is of particular interest. Therefore, this work is related to laser-induced damage in polymer optical fibers at a wavelength of 532 nm and a pulse duration of 7.3 ns. In particular, the influence of the coupling condition on the transmittable pulse energy and the damage behavior applying an R-on-1 test procedure are analyzed in this study. The obtained results give information about the long-Term behavior and will be used to optimize the manufacturing process. © COPYRIGHT SPI

    Laser-induced degradation and damage morphology in polymer optical fibers

    The radiation of pulsed laser systems can generate changes in various materials. On the one hand, these modifications can be used for a variety of applications i.e. laser welding, cutting and many more [1]. The precision and quality depends on the material and laser parameters. On the other hand, material changes are not always desired in other applications. When using optical materials such as optical fibers as a light guide or as a sensor, laser-induced damage effects inside the fiber are to be prevented to ensure constant light guidance and the reliable monitoring of a desired parameter. Therefore, investigations for quality assurance need to be performed. For this reason, this work investigates laserinduced damage in polymer optical fibers (POF) using a nanosecond pulsed laser system at a wavelength of 532 nm. The impact of different laser and fiber parameters on the long-term degradation behavior is observed. In addition, the overall degradation behavior as well as the knowledge gained by analyzing the damage morphology and distribution will be used to obtain a better understanding of the damage mechanisms

    Exponential Replication of Patterns in the Signal Tile Assembly Model

    Chemical self-replicators are of considerable interest in the field of nanomanufacturing and as a model for evolution. We introduce the problem of self-replication of rectangular two-dimensional patterns in the practically motivated Signal Tile Assembly Model (STAM) [9]. The STAM is based on the Tile Assembly Model (TAM) which is a mathematical model of self-assembly in which DNA tile monomers may attach to other DNA tile monomers in a programmable way. More abstractly, four-sided tiles are assigned glue types to each edge, and self-assembly occurs when singleton tiles bind to a growing assembly, if the glue types match and the glue binding strength exceeds some threshold. The signal tile extension of the TAM allows signals to be propagated across assemblies to activate glues or break apart assemblies. Here, we construct a pattern replicator that replicates a two-dimensional input pattern over some fixed alphabet of size φ with O(φ) tile types, O(φ) unique glues, and a signal complexity of O(1). Furthermore, we show that this replication system displays exponential growth in n, the number of replicates of the initial patterned assembly

    Net neutrality discourses: comparing advocacy and regulatory arguments in the United States and the United Kingdom

    Telecommunications policy issues rarely make news, much less mobilize thousands of people. Yet this has been occurring in the United States around efforts to introduce "Net neutrality" regulation. A similar grassroots mobilization has not developed in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in Europe. We develop a comparative analysis of U.S. and UK Net neutrality debates with an eye toward identifying the arguments for and against regulation, how those arguments differ between the countries, and what the implications of those differences are for the Internet. Drawing on mass media, advocacy, and regulatory discourses, we find that local regulatory precedents as well as cultural factors contribute to both agenda setting and framing of Net neutrality. The differences between national discourses provide a way to understand both the structural differences between regulatory cultures and the substantive differences between policy interpretations, both of which must be reconciled for the Internet to continue to thrive as a global medium

    Templated Synthesis of Peptide Nucleic Acids via Sequence-Selective Base-Filling Reactions

    The templated synthesis of nucleic acids has previously been achieved through the backbone ligation of preformed nucleotide monomers or oligomers. In contrast, here we demonstrate templated nucleic acid synthesis using a base-filling approach in which individual bases are added to abasic sites of a peptide nucleic acid (PNA). Because nucleobase substrates in this approach are not self-reactive, a base-filling approach may reduce the formation of nontemplated reaction products. Using either reductive amination or amine acylation chemistries, we observed efficient and selective addition of each of the four nucleobases to an abasic site in the middle of the PNA strand. We also describe the addition of single nucleobases to the end of a PNA strand through base filling, as well as the tandem addition of two bases to the middle of the PNA strand. These findings represent an experimental foundation for nonenzymatic information transfer through base filling.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog

    Transient and sustained bacterial adaptation following repeated sublethal exposure to microbicides and a novel human antimicrobial peptide

    Microbicides (biocides) play an important role in the prevention and treatment of infections. While there is currently little evidence for in-use treatment failures attributable to acquired reductions in microbicide susceptibility, the susceptibility of some bacteria can be reduced by sublethal laboratory exposure to certain agents. In this investigation, a range of environmental bacterial isolates (11 genera, 18 species) were repeatedly exposed to four microbicides (cetrimide, chlorhexidine, polyhexamethylene biguanide [PHMB], and triclosan) and a cationic apolipoprotein E-derived antimicrobial peptide (apoEdpL-W) using a previously validated exposure system. Susceptibilities (MICs and minimum bactericidal concentrations [MBCs]) were determined before and after 10 passages (P10) in the presence of an antimicrobial and then after a further 10 passages without an antimicrobial to determine the stability of any adaptations. Bacteria exhibiting >4-fold increases in MBCs were further examined for alterations in biofilm-forming ability. Following microbicide exposure, ≥4-fold decreases in susceptibility (MIC or MBC) occurred for cetrimide (5/18 bacteria), apoEdpL-W (7/18), chlorhexidine (8/18), PHMB (8/18), and triclosan (11/18). Of the 34 ≥4-fold increases in the MICs, 15 were fully reversible, 13 were partially reversible, and 6 were nonreversible. Of the 26 ≥4-fold increases in the MBCs, 7 were fully reversible, 14 were partially reversible, and 5 were nonreversible. Significant decreases in biofilm formation in P10 strains occurred for apoEdpL-W (1/18 bacteria), chlorhexidine (1/18), and triclosan (2/18), while significant increases occurred for apoEdpL-W (1/18), triclosan (1/18), and chlorhexidine (2/18). These data indicate that the stability of induced changes in microbicide susceptibility varies but may be sustained for some combinations of a bacterium and a microbicide
